I bought a pattern regulator / rectifier and fitted it but
the bike is still not charging the battery. Green is
booked in next week for a professional to have a look at
it. Update It was just corroded wiring, and fixed
in under an hour! Plus the number plate was cracking so I
ordered, and fitted a new one. This one is metal so should
be a bit more robust! As usual Blue is running
|April 2018 Not enjoyable was
breaking down on Green, and waiting ages for
recovery. I think the regulator / rectifier may have
failed, or the stator as the bike is not charging the
Flat tire now has new heavy duty inner tube, and noticed horn not always working so replaced it.

been riding Blue occasionally, but just into
January 2018 Green has been naughty again, and has a minor electrical fault I can't find, which started after I jet washed it? I should have left it muddy!!!
|December 2017 Not ridden much
recently, but I did have a little chug about on Green,
and gave her a quick jet wash. See left before, and after.
|November 2017 I popped down to see
the HAV Airlander 10 in the sunshine on Green.
I replaced the clutch switch on Green as it was not working. A bit fiddly, but was able to do this myself. I have a wish list to do on both Serow over the winter. They may get done, or not? No panic as both bikes are ready to ride.

|June 2017 Both Serow passed
the MOT (UK safety check) this week. The only work
required was that Green needed a new tail light
bulb, which I sourced, & fixed myself.

|March 2017 I got Green out
to ride, but it had a punctured front tyre so as I had
some spare time I took the front wheel off, and have
dropped it off to get some duff spokes fixed, and a new
inner tube. Plus I took the front calliper off, and sent
that away for rebuilding as it had been dragging. Just
waiting for all the bits to come back, and refit them.
I took Blue to Torque Racing where Martin fitted a new rear tyre, and some bar risers. I have been riding all the bikes when the weather has been mild. A few more snaps here.

times wet, and windy so far this winter in the UK so I
have been able to get out on all the bikes at times,
although nothing photo worthy.
November 2015 I went to Kimbolton Castle for first time to have a little look around. Interesting place where Catherine of Aragon (Henry VIII's first wife) lived out her days under house arrest... Afterwards a short trail ride on Blue. I took some snaps, and you can see them here.

Bedfordshire, & Cambridgeshire in the sunshine. I'm
getting used to the new Maxxis IT tyres, but Green is still being
naughty, and not starting first time on the button every
time, although with patience it will start eventually
Ridden Green this time to get the Maxxis IT fitted at Torque Racing Services then tried a few green lanes in that area I had not tried before plus Ashwell Street, which I know well.

I refitted the front wheel to Blue, and had a short ride on her Monday. I still need to fix the heated grips but no rush.
|October 2015 I hadn't ridden Blue
for over a week so thought I would ride it to work, and
another puncture! This time the front, but I was close to
home so was able to wobble back. I took it into Bedford
Wheels, and they found a thorn had gone through
tyre, and inner tube so that is fixed now. Just got to put
the wheel back in the bike. Oh and I noticed the heated
grips are not working so that needs looking into.
Hopefully just a lose connection?
Recently, I had a busy day in the sunshine with a short trail ride on Green (see left) followed by watching the last ever Avro Vulcan flying display...

|September 2015 I have been on a ride
on Blue to Village
at War event at Stoke Bruerne, but got a puncture on
the way home so will be sorting that this week, and Green
is still waiting for a new starter relay. Update Blue
has a new inner tube, and is running fine.
Green is still waiting for a new starter relay. I got bored of waiting for a UK supplier that was promising much, but sadly didn't have the part so have now ordered from the USA, and the part is on the way. I hope to have it this week, and will install it. Update Green has a new relay, but still will not start. I have got the battery on charge overnight as the bike has not been started for several weeks now, but I'm not confident this is the problem.
|August 2015 Blue is running fine but Green
has been naughty not starting so I bought a new battery,
which I fitted, and the bike still does not start. I'm
going to try a new starter relay next as the one in the
bike is very corroded.
July 2015 I had my first trail ride on Green some snaps here. Still happy with it, although it would not start until the battery had a quick charge so that will need replacing at some point. The seller did tell me he had not changed it so no surprise really.
I went to the Oakley
Carnival on Green. Still happy with Green,
although I have noticed that one indicator does not
work. It will need to be fixed some time.
|July 2015 I have
bought another Yamaha Serow this time a 2007 250cc bike
built in Japan. I have had a few short rides on it, and
am happy with it. It is very tatty, but was cheap for
the UK, and appears to be running fine fingers crossed.
I will sell Blue eventually, but no rush. I'm
going to be predictable and call this one Green.
Also I have been out trail riding on Blue a couple of times in the sunshine.
|June 2015 I volunteered to help out at an event at the College Equestrian Centre near Keysoe. This was arranged through the TRF as a bit of bridge building... I only did the afternoon but had fun riding around the cross country track picking up score cards and dropping them off at the main centre. It is all private land, and an area I would not normally be allowed on to especially on the bike!|

I had a trail ride on Blue plus a first visit to Hitchin Lavender for a coffee. I didn't have a look around the lavender fields as they were only just starting to colour, but think I will have another look sometime soon.
2015 I went on a
trail ride with the TRF,
which I enjoyed. Picked up a couple of lanes I had not
ridden before. On the way back I did this lane on my own
that I have ridden only once before. It is a dead end
due to the footbridge over the railway.

now on at my request I'm only working 4 days/week,
which makes me happy. More days off for fun in the
sun, and typically it is raining today! Oh well
gives me time to update this, Facebook, and push the
Dyson round the house... I might go mad and actually
"cook" something today!

is running fine and starting first time.
October 2014 I had a short ride on Blue recently into town to La Piazza for coffee, and chat in the sunshine. Also I have ridden to work a few times as the weather has been very mild in the UK this Autumn so far, but not much to report.
September 2014 I had another trail ride on Blue on trails that I know well. The lanes where in good condition with hardly any mud as it has been dry recently, but most of my local lanes now close until May next year. On the left is Hangman's Lane near Keysoe.
2014 I had a trail ride on Blue
mostly on lanes I know, and I tried a couple of others
that were closed, but then did get on three easy trails I
had not ridden before. On the left I didn't take much
notice of the sign, which says something about the trail
being 1.25 miles but pedestrians, and cyclists only after
1 mile. As a result after 1 mile I came to a footbridge
over a railway line, and had to turn back.
I took the tax disc holder off as we no longer need to display them in the UK.
2014 I went on a trail ride with the TRF a bit of a slow
start to the day, but once we got going I much enjoyed the
day. Lots of trails new to me as we were riding in an area

Recently I went for a trail ride on Blue, which I

Since then I have adjusted and lubricated the chain on Blue. Not done much else news worthy. I have been riding Blue, but just work...
I have been riding Blue, but nothing
"exciting" just work, shopping... However, I am going
trail riding on Tuesday so should be some pic's to upload
after that. The bike is certainly starting better with the
new battery. Even after a week or so it fires up first
June 2014 I gave Blue a mini maintenance session, which was just knocking some of the mud off, adjusting and oiling the chain, plus a very quick check over and a short jet wash. She then had her annual service with Jamie at Two Wheels Better. I took her for her MOT (UK safety check) and she passed. I've also paid out for road tax, and insurance so all good to go for another year now. I was a bit surprised I had only done 1500 miles on her in the last year when I did about 3000 the year before. I know I have not done much trail riding, but I do use her on the roads as well.
I fitted the new maintenance free battery and connected the terminals the correct way around this time then she started first time. I've only ridden her a few times since to work, the public library, and the Oakley Motorcycle Club ...

weekend I rode Blue down to La
Piazza where I had coffee, and met up with a few other
bikers for a chug around the Bedfordshire back roads.
Only did about 30 miles all on tarmac, but it was a
nice sunny day so all good. We stopped at The Jackal
for a drink, comfort break, and more chat. Plus I've
ridden Blue to work a couple of times, into
town, and the Oakley
Motorcycle Club once as I got off work early
Recently I rode Blue for another trail ride
with my mate Mark, and another guy Paul. We have
stopped for coffee at the Market Café in St. Neots.
Generally good ride although Mark and I somehow
managed to have synchronised crashes on an easy trail,
but nobody hurt or anything broken so no problem.

|April 2014 I
rode Blue, which is now fixed, for a trail ride
with my mate Mark on his Honda. We rode almost 100 miles
of which maybe 10 was off tarmac? See left and some more
pictures here. It took a new front tube (the
old one had perished,) plus a new fuse, and all was well
again, & not too expensive either.
Things have not been so good with Blue as she would not start again this week I ordered a new battery, which arrived quickly. I went for a maintenance free version, but when I got Blue out to fit it I noticed she had a flat tyre. I'm working on getting that fixed, but anyway I installed the new battery. However, I didn't notice the positive and negative terminals were reversed on the new battery and so have damaged the electrics on Blue. I hope this won't be too time consuming, and expensive to fix!

|March 2014 Last Sunday on the best
day of the year so far for weather I had a coffee at La
Piazza in Bedford followed by a trail ride with a mate
over towards Royston, and we had a tea break at the Silver
Ball. We went on trails I knew apart from one short trail
I'd not been on previously. Several of the trails were new
to my mate. On the left we are heading back towards home
on the Icknield Way near Ashwell village. Some snaps here.
I think the battery has had it on Blue she runs OK, and will start on the button when warm, but from cold I have to jump start her even though I keep her on a trickle charger (when I remember to turn it on!) I've bought a cheap multimeter to do some basic checks, but basically the battery is 3 years or more old, and I think it needs changing?
|February 2014 I rode Blue for a bit of a B road ride around North Bedfordshire in early February. She started first time, and was faultless including riding twice through 6 inches of water on The Causeway between Carlton, and Harrold villages.|

November 2013 I have ridden Blue to a Herts Beds and Bucks fun day at the Old Sugar Loaf pub in Dunstable, and on the way back I had a short ride on a byway near Steppingley.
Blue started first time, and was faultless. I was reminded how much better this bike is off tarmac with the knobblies. I've ridden this short trail with the Avon Distenzas on and it was like a wet dog on lino, but with the Pirelli MT21 Rallycross so easy.
2013 I bought but have not yet fitted a
couple of lever covers. Also I might get heated
grips as well? I need some warmer weather so that
I can ride over to see the guy and get them
fitted, or maybe wait until the spring?

couple of times recently as it has been mild between the
showers, and rain other than that I still appear to be
more. Anyway most of the local green
lanes are now shut until 1st May so will not be much to
report for awhile?
September 2013 Recently on Blue I had a chug about on road with P riding her bike in the sunshine to the Quarryman's Rest Café at Irchester Country Park. I've not ridden Blue much recently partly as it would not start one day when I wanted to ride. It turned out the battery was low again, my fault, and partly I've just been riding Red more when I have spare time. I would like to get some trail riding in before the local lanes close for the winter, but time is fast running out.

Thursday I rode Blue to "Yamaha Night" at the Oakley
I tested the sat nav on my Nokia Lumia which was educational. I knew the speedo was way out on Blue especially since I had the knobblies fitted, but ridding through town with 25 MPH showing on the speedo the sat nav showed 31MPH, and on the A6 when the road opened up 55 MPH on the speedo was about 69 MPH on the sat nav! Also I played with the sat nav in the dark for the first time on the ride home, which worked well. It's OK on dull days, but hard to read in bright sunlight.
I've treated myself to a white Strada Sting
helmet. It's an off road style helmet that I have worn for
trail riding last week, and I'm happy with it. Riding Blue
it was a bit slippery as we have had a couple of weeks of
great weather in the UK, but it rained the night before
our trail ride.
2013 I went on Blue
to Ton Up Day at Jacks Hill Cafe.
I enjoyed that but it was very hot so then went for a
little ride around Silverstone
where they had European F3 car racing, but we didn't stop
long. After a bit more cruising around we had a drink at Box End Park then

||July 2013 The previous Friday I had a ride about on Blue to the Yamaha dealer in Northants first so that M could get his bike serviced. While we were waiting we walked over to Northants V Twin to have a look and a cuppa. When M's bike was ready we rode over to Sywell Aerodrome for a coffee. They had the UK Acrobatics championship on so we could watch the planes making great moves in the sky. Next we went to the J&S Outlet near Finedon to look at the gear, but didn't buy any then home. I think we did about 90 miles including getting lost looking for the J&S Outlet as I'd never been there before.|
2013 Recently I rode Blue on a
trail ride with my buddy Mark around Cambridgeshire,
Northants, & North Beds in the sunshine. We were out
and about for 5 hours and did about 90 miles. We did stop
for a coffee in Oundle, and I had a cream tea at The
Kiosk on the way home. A few snaps here. We spotted loads of red kites
in particular around the Oundle area which appears to be a
hot spot for them for some reason.
2013 Recently I had
another ride with M on Blue where we rode around
a lot of B roads over towards Colmworth, Eaton Socon...
Then a coffee stop at Danish Camp,
which surprisingly I've never been to before even though
it is not far from my home. Whilst over near Blunham we
had a good view of a red kite.
In the afternoon I took Blue for her annual MOT (safety check) which she passed. Previously I had a ride on Blue with M to Stoke Bruerne for coffee plus cake break then back via the Marston Vale Forest Centre. I guess today was the hottest day of the year so far? We rode out via various villages and B roads then back by main roads. I think we went down a couple of roads I've never been down before?
2013 I went to Motorama local
charity car and bike show at Olney.
I've been to this before so had seen some of the
cars in the past, but still plenty to see. I've loaded
loads of snaps here. As a bonus there was a drive in
of almost 50 model T Fords. Whilst there I had a coffee in
and also had a first look around The
Cowper and Newton Museum.
Then I went to Sywell Aerodrome where it was a bit quiet but there was a gathering of TVR cars, and a few of the Ford Model Ts showed up. The sun had come out and I had an ice cream before riding home.
2013 I had another ride about on Blue
with M where we had a coffee at Dunstable
Downs Visitor Centre, and then a quick stop at the Triumph
dealer in Woburn before work and in the sunshine.
Recently I was out again on Blue in the sunshine. I had another ride with new rider M, and we rounded up a few other people for a ride to Ken's Diner for a break then back via a different route. Also we met some other people there. I think we did about 60 miles. I thought it was going to be one of those days when within half a mile of starting our ride "Captain Volvo" came cruising up the wrong side of the road! With 5 other bikes behind me I was a bit worried, but everybody noticed him coming and went around him. I'm in a right hand turn lane, indicating right, then I have to dodge to my left to miss him. You can see it here in this short video plus a cyclist right at the start run a red light! On the way back we had a good view of a red kite. I did miss one turn on the way home but it only lead to a small detour and OK with that.

to a good start with a B road ride on Blue before work that
included a stop for coffee at Tea-Zels Café at Harrold-Odell
Country Park. I have been to the park a few times
but don't think I've been in the very pleasant café
before? This was with the new rider M I've mentioned
2013 On Bank Holiday Monday I went for
another trail ride on Blue mostly on trails I
know, but I did go on one I've been trying to get on for
three years, but it has always been closed for "repairs."
Anyway cracking little trail and I was pleased to see a
couple of deer.
I had a coffee at The Heath in Royston in the sunshine, and later another at the Surfin Café in Biggleswade, which I had not been to before. There's a few pic's here including some of a steam lorry I chanced upon when riding back. I have seen the lorry before at the Stotfold Working Steam Fair, but this time it was in steam ready to go.
2013 I have been out and about on Blue during the UK Bank
holiday weekend as for once I was on rest days & the
weather was good!
On Bank holiday Sunday I met up with a mate to go trail riding, which was good fun. Didn't go that far, and I did have a low speed tumble, but nothing bruised or broken. Then we had a cake break at Miss MoMo's Tea Shop at Biddenham Village Hall. On the way home I popped in on the Bedford International Kite Festival. Really good day out without spending much.
||May 2013 On Bank Holiday Saturday I went to Sywell Aerodrome, and had a look in the Museum, which I've not done before. It's free, but I did make a small donation. Then I had a look at the Piper vintage aircraft that were having a fly in. I had a coffee and cake in the Pilots' Mess. Then I went to the Robin Hood pub in Clifton Reynes near Olney for a local bike and car show (a few pic's here,) and finally another local bike show at the Swan With Two Nicks pub in Sharnbrook (a few more pic's here.) Not a huge amount to see, but it was a nice day, and I had not been to either pub before.|
2013 Recently I went for a B road ride
about on Blue with one of the guys from work. He
has just got a 125cc bike and is learning to ride. Bit of
a grey morning but we had a nice ride of about 40 miles
including a stop for coffee at Jordans Mill. I'd
not been there before, and we sat inside as it was a bit
chilly for sitting by the water. Anyway very nice new
visitor centre and café, which I'm sure I will visit again
soon. You can also pay a small charge to have a tour of
the mill building, although I didn't this time.
Yesterday as I finished work early I had a bonus trip on Blue to the Oakley Motorcycle Club where it was a Honda themed evening, and there were also some T.T. racers present. I had a very nice pint of Ale Fresco outdoors whilst talking bike stuff to some of the club members.
2013 I had a trail ride on Blue
with a mate. We arranged it awhile back but when I noticed
the weather forecast was for a "monsoon" I nearly
cancelled but the rain held off until after lunch. We
stopped at Grafham
Water for a cuppa when randomly about 8 police
riders turned up.
2013 Good day last Thursday where I had a
trail ride on Blue in
the sunshine including good views of a red kite. I even
got a blurry photo of it. I uploaded a few snaps of my
ride here. Blue
performed how I imagined with the new gearing. It is
even easier in town and on trail and on faster roads my
top speed has dropped but the bike picks up speed and
holds top speed easier. On open roads the engine sounds
busy as it is doing more rev's for any given speed but
also it sounds like it is not labouring.
is back from Jamie now and running well. He did a
service plus he refitted the tool thing I took off when
I fitted the rack and also changed the screws on the
final drive cover for allen keys so that I can get them
off at the roadside if I need to plus a regular service,
new chain & sprockets... I still need to find
somewhere to refit the helmet lock but it's not a
priority. If I pop into town I can put the helmet in the
top box, but when I ride off tarmac I take the top box
off and that is when a helmet lock would be useful.
I went to Ride Free on Red as Blue was not back from Jamie in time. Not a huge amount to see but it was free entry and just nice to be outside chatting with other bikers. Part of the event was the Steve Colley trials show which was impressive. I took a few snaps which I uploaded here.
|| April 2013 I've worn my new Akito
motorcycle trousers a couple of times now and for what I
paid I'm happy with them. They were marked up @ over £100
but I paid less than half that.
Blue is in for a service with Jamie at Two Wheels Better but I hope to have her back in time for Ride Free.
I purchased a pair of Akito motorcycle trousers, which were very affordable in a sale. What caught my eye about them apart from the price was that they were advertised as short leg so the knee pads are in the right place and not half way down my shins!
||I had a little trail ride with my buddy who
has a newish Honda CRF250L. Most of my local lanes are
closed until 1st May but we managed to find a couple that
were open. We took a few snaps which you can see here.
Blue appears to be starting OK now. I eventually noticed she was low on fuel so she has had a top up with fresh fuel and been ridden over 50 miles so fingers crossed that is the end of her playing up? Also the battery needed topping up so I doubt that helped!
||April 2013 I ordered
a new chain and both sprockets to be fitted when the bike
has a service at the end of this month, and they have
arrived. I decided to change from a 15 tooth front
sprocket to a 14 to lower the gearing a bit. I find that
since I fitted the knobblies the bike struggles to hit and
hold top speed. I'm not sure if this is because the
knobblies have a larger radius than the street tyres I had
before, or maybe the knobblies have a higher rolling
resistance, or a bit of each? I understand the top speed
of the bike will drop but I should be able to hit and hold
a decent number of rev's in 6th gear on the tarmac plus it
will have a bit more go in each gear.
I bought a new pair of silk under gloves from fleabag that were cheap, arrived quickly, and I'm happy with.

recently to collect my new glasses & Blue
would not start so I went on Red.
Since then another day it would not start but last
Sunday it fired up first time so I'm not sure what is
going on? It may need a new battery, or maybe one of my
trickle chargers is playing up, or stale fuel, or does
it just need to be ridden more? Update added
some fresh fuel from a can, and it started. So it was
either stale fuel, or maybe it was just low on fuel?
March 2013 I've booked a service for Blue with Jamie at Two Wheels Better for the end of April ready for the local green lanes to open on 1st May. Well I hope they open but as it has been so wet I would not be surprised if they local authority T.R.O. (Temporary Road Order) many of them.
|| The local Ride
Free event due for Sunday has been cancelled due to
the weather. It should be rescheduled in about 6 weeks
time. I was planning to attend but it is predicted to be
only just above freezing and maybe some snow so I was
having second thoughts even before I heard it was off and
I got injured.
I've treated myself to some new summer gloves for when I'm off tarmac. My old ones were looking very tatty. They are nothing special just RST gloves but should do the job.
I got Blue out to pop into town yesterday and again she would not start. Think I need to have a proper look at my trickle chargers or maybe it just needs a new battery? All I did last time was swap the trickle charger cables over and leave it a day then it started first time. The battery is not flat but does not have enough juice to turn the engine over when the bike has been standing for several weeks.
||February 2013 I got Blue out
to pop round to a mate's house last weekend on a lovely
sunny mild day and she would not start. After some
investigation it turned out the battery was not charging
from the trickle charger. All sorted now and she is
running again but today it is cloudy and only just above
I've signed up for a half price Bikesafe course but it is not until June.
January 2013 First ride of the year on Blue to Sywell Country Park, which I had not been to before. It's an old reservoir and water treatment works no longer in use, and it has been turned into a park. I enjoyed that and then went to the nearby Sywell Aerodrome for a coffee. After that I was ridding about some B roads and came across a byway that was open and I'd only been on once before so thought I would have a little look, but turned back after a couple of hundred yards as it was a mud bath and also I was not sure of the route and did not have a map with me. I've uploaded a few snaps here.
|December 2012 Third ride on Blue in 8 days. This time to the Super Sausage café on the A5 near Towcester with the HBBB group and then had a quick look at the Concrete Cows on the way back. They have had a make over recently. Then I was going for a coffee in Supamoto forgetting that they shut on Sunday in the winter so diverted to La Piazza in Bedford.|
|December 2012 Second ride on Blue in less than a
week. Maybe not a record for winter but not bad and it was
a proper ride of over 50 miles. I went with a mate to
Earls Barton for the first time for a tea and cake at Jeyes.
For the older amongst you yes the Jeyes Fluid people. My
mate had to head back but I had a look around the place
and then rode back via various B roads. On the way home I
spotted a "Common" Buzzard in tree right next to the road,
which was a nice bonus.
I got Blue out and rode into town for a coffee with a chum at La Piazza in Bedford. That's just over 6 miles! Oh well I have ridden it and it was good to sit in the sunshine and talk bikes. There were a few other bikers there a couple of which I also know and some scooter riders to.
2012 I took Blue
down to Scorpio Racing in Kempston to have her cleaned
and coated with ACF-50 liquid. I was happy with the work
done and they adjusted the chain and straightened the
gear change for free! Other than that not much news as
it has been wet and most of my local green lanes are now
closed for the winter I've not been off tarmac recently.
I have ridden the bike into to town a few times for
shopping as there is free motorcycle parking but in the
car I have to either pay or park and walk.
||October 2012 I rode Blue to work once and stopped off on the way at Supamoto for a coffee and chat. Other than that not much to report. I hope to get Blue out the odd day in the winter for a bit of light trail riding on the lanes that are still open locally and just to keep her ticking over. The rest of the time she will be locked up in my garage with the trickle charger running.|
||September 2012 I had a trail ride early in the month, and at long last most of the trails were open in North Bedfordshire. All was going well until I had a comedy off, but the chain jumped the rear sprocket and jammed up in the front one. After some messing about with the tools we had we gave up and pushed the bike to the nearest road, which was only a few hundred yards but uphill! I then called RAC breakdown who arrived within 1 hour & were able to fix it so I could ride home. Whilst riding home I realised the forks were a little twisted in the yokes but as I've been busy at work and riding about on Red it's taken a while to sort but Jamie of Two Wheels Better has fixed it now.|
||August 2012 I had another trail ride on Blue. We were mostly on the Icknield Way between Ashwell and Melbourn plus a few bits and bobs. We did about 60 miles in total although less than 20 was off tarmac. A few snaps are loaded here.|
||I've had a busy couple of
days at Silverstone watching practice and the WSB races.
It was sunshine and showers, which must have been tricky
for the riders, & a number came off. I took loads of
pic's some of which you can see here. I went on Red on Saturday which I've not
ridden recently. I thought the handling was off &
when I got back I checked the tyre pressures & found
the rear was very low. So on the Sunday I went on Blue.
On the way home on Sunday the mileage clicked
over 5,000 and I had a nice ride down to Buckingham then
across to Bedford on the A421 in the sunshine.
July 2012 I had an easy trail ride on Blue on Sunday morning mostly on the Icknield Way Roman Road around Ashwell and over towards Royston. I went to the Silver Ball Café on the A10 for a cuppa. There were a few bikers at the café including a group of H-D riders but nothing that exciting. Then a trail I'd never been on before between the villages of Reed and Barkway and I tried a trail from Therfield village I'd also not been on previously but it was closed for repairs, but I do know exactly where it is now. Plus I went to Stevenage for a very nice roast beef lunch.
The speedo has almost 5,000 miles on it now and I think it had less than 2,500 when I got it 13 months ago. Not bad as I also have a cage and Red.
I had a trail ride on Blue last Friday evening with a mate that has just got an old Honda XR 250cc. Many of my local trails were still closed due to the wet Spring we had in the UK (see a list of closures here) but we managed to find a few bits and bobs to ride on.
| Last week I finally
got around to taking the rubber bits off the footpegs
for better grip off tarmac. Only taken me a year to do a
5 minute job! I did intend to do this when I got to
Wales last year and this year but it didn't happen!
I have been up to North Wales for a week to see my chums who live near Lake Bala, and ride Blue on and off tarmac. The weather was all over the place as usual but I enjoyed my break and took some snaps. You can see them here. Whilst there I visited various preserved steam railways but didn't ride on any of them. I find they often have a decent café , parking, and loos so a handy place to visit with the bonus for me of seeing a live steam train, or two. I went to the Fairbourne Steam Railway for the first time, and repeat visits to the Talyllyn Railway, & Llangollen Railway. I was going to have a first look at the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway on the way home but managed to just miss one train and the next was not for a couple of hours, and as there did not appear to be much to keep me entertained at Welshpool Station I pushed on towards Jack's Hill Café. In all I did about 750 miles in 8 days with most of this on tarmac.
A highlight of the trip was a red kite almost crashing into me as it tried to grab some road kill right next to me.
I am happy with the Pirelli MT21 Rallycross off tarmac and on tarmac they are OK as I expected with less grip than the Avon Distenzas I took off and still have.

|June 2012 I went down to Bedford
Wheels and got the Pirelli MT21s Rallycross
at long last. Not cheap but supposed to be a good, and
the price included fitting. I asked for
the old Avon Distenzas
back to store for future use. They are great on
tarmac, and hard ground, but not elsewhere.
||The hand guards I ordered last week have turned up and I've fitted them . They are actually listed as DT 125 parts by Yamaha. The clutch side went straight on but I did have to remove a small amount of plastic from the brake side to get it to fit.|
|Blue went in for it's annual MOT
(safety) test on Monday morning which it passed, and
as it was Ride to
Work Day I rode her to work in the afternoon. I've had
her for a year now and I am very happy with her. That's
the second Serow I've got unseen off fleabay. I would not
recommend buying bikes unseen, but it has worked for me!
Maybe I've just been very lucky?
Last week I had a trail ride on Blue with a mate in the morning. I took a few snaps with my mobile, which you can see here. It was a bit muddy and wet in places and my mate did take a tumble which you can see from his helmet cam here, and a longer video here of a different trail. Also I visited the Oakley Motorcycle Club that evening.
As to knobblies think I'm going for the Pirelli MT21 Rallycross but have not ordered them yet. They are supposed to be good both on and off tarmac and are road legal in the U.K. I like the look of the Continental Twinduro but don't think they do the right sizes as they are intended for bigger dual sport bikes.
I was intending to look into knobblies a bit more for my trip next month to North Wales but ended up buying a Wolfman Enduro tank bag for the bike. It has arrived and looks good. It's small so only good for a few bits and bobs but has some useful pockets... It's not waterproof but small enough to cover with a shopping bag or similar if I use it in the rain. In particular I like that you can fill up the bike without taking the bag off.
May 2012 I had a little trail ride last Sunday. Whilst out and about I stumbled across the Classic Ford Show at Santa Pod. Lots of lovely old Ford cars for rally, road... I didn't stay long as I had not put any sun screen on and it was hot and sunny all day. Also whilst out I did see a red kite whilst riding on the B645 near Rushden.
I needed to pop into town on Saturday & I went on Blue then on the way back decided to have a coffee at The Embankment. I'm sitting outside in the sunshine nice and relaxed when random senior backs his car into my bike. No damage done but why me!
The weather has turned fine at last so I've been riding Blue or Red to work for the last few days. The top box is very handy for bits and bobs like waterproofs...
I've not ridden Blue much as it keeps raining! The local green lanes are now open for the summer but I've not ventured on any yet due to the rain and the fact I still don't have any knobblies for Blue. The local authority close the lanes for the winter when it was dry and they would have been fine. Now it's spring and pouring it down. Must be another Murphy's law or something?
|April 2012 I went to Ride Free 2012 on Blue which I enjoyed and it was sunny if a little chilly to start with. In particular I liked the Dave Coates stunt show. I loaded a few pic's here. Then I had a short trail ride as there's a green lane near the venue that is open all year and it's been dry for ages so it was easy going. I can't go out on Red as she's still waiting for clutch parts.|

Better and he fitted the "new" bash plate, changed
the fork seals, flushed the brake fluid and serviced the
front brake... All looks good now apart from he said the
chain and sprockets will probably need changing next
winter. That's not a surprise to me! I just need to sort
out those knobblies ready for the local green lanes to
open on 1st May and North Wales trip which is in July this
The used bash plate has arrived from the USA and looks good although not so cheap after I got charged import duty and a handling charge on top!
I've been on to Jamie at Two Wheels Better and booked a date from him to service the bike and swap the bash plates over... No rush as the local green lanes don't reopen until 1st May. I've been "researching" knobblies and the Pirelli MT21 Rallycross look good but maybe a bit pricey? Looks like Maxxis do something similar and perhaps a bit cheaper?

December 2011 I rode Blue to work once between Xmas and New year as it was sunny and mild. Before Xmas I fitted the top box (see left) and it looks good. It has a quick release thing inside so that I can take it off and the base plate stays bolted to the rack. It didn't take that long to fit once I had all the bits.
I ordered a cheap plastic top box to go on the rack I
fitted months ago. It's arrived and we will see how long
it takes me to fit it? Update
on checking the instructions some of the fixing
bits are missing. I have been on to suppliers and hope to
have missing bits mid-week.
September 2011 I went for two trail rides late in the month before the local green lanes close for the winter. The later mostly around North Beds including a stop for food at The Quarryman's Rest café at Irchester Country Park went well apart from one comedy get off on wet mud on Yelnow Lane and I've hurt my knee! I hope it is nothing major and will be OK in a day or two. See picture on left and comment below about boots. There was not a cloud in the sky and it was hot all day. I then went to the O.M.C. meet for a pint and chat.
|The first ride I went to AJ's Diner in
Wellingborough for refreshments which I enjoyed. It's a Happy Days/50's
styled place above a new motorcycle dealer. Inside it
reminded me of Angel's diner in Palatka.
The Avon Distanzias boots on this bike that have impressed on the road and that were OK in North Wales were not much good as I expected in the mud and leaves rapidly clogging up and sliding around (see left.) I will need to think about some more off road boots for next year. Also I noticed the left hand fork seal is leaking so more expense! There's a few more pic's here.

afternoon to the Civic Theatre Bedford for a free
talk about adventure travel by Paddy Tyson, Sam
Manicom, and Simon Gandolfi. Both of these I rode to on Blue.
I was trying not to spend any more money but I recently bought a rack (see left.) I had a quick look at fitting it the day I got it but locks like the helmet lock is in the way and I could not get that off quickly. Rack fitted and I did indeed need to remove the helmet lock. I'm looking for a suitable place to refit it but not urgent.
| July 2011 My White '92 Serow (see left) has sold and
Tom has collected it. I hope he is as happy with it as I
have been. I didn't want to sell but just got the Blue '04 Serow which
needs a new chain and sprockets, the Buell
needs new boots soon, and the cage needs a new radiator,
and I might pay out for a Sky dish...

I rode there both days on Blue and got free parking which was nice. On the Sunday I tried out a couple of trails I'd never been on before near Hitchin/Luton. Nothing that exciting but was good to go off road on Blue and I had a good view of a red kite to.
|June 2011 Just back from a good week
riding on and off tarmac in North Wales mostly on familiar
trails but did try a couple of new ones. I've loaded some
pic's here. I went on the Blue Serow and it ran
perfectly apart from the chain &/or sprockets are
rubbish. I have adjusted the chain several times already
and taken a link out even though I've only done 800 miles
on it and drenched it in chain spray several times.

parade around the village with the Oakley Motorcycle Club.
June 2011 I bought another Serow. This addition to my "fleet" is a Blue 2004 Brazilian built model with less than 2,500 clicks on the clock.
|May 2011 I was out recently on some easy
trails in North Beds/Cambridgeshire borders. Everything
went well apart from the branch (see left) blocking Donkey
Lane near Keysoe. I've e.mailed the Bedford Rights of Way
team about this.
I've been using White as my day to day wheels recently as my cage has been playing up and the weather has been great. So I swapped to my Buell but the Buell was overdue for a service and it took me a fortnight to get that sorted.

|May 2011 Early in the month I was out on
the lanes around Santa
Pod. Didn't try any new lanes or even go out for
that long but it was good to be riding about in the
sunshine on White.
April 2011 I rode to the Ride Free event at Old Warden on White then to Stevenage and back. Was good to be out and chugging about in the sunshine.
The speedometer now shows over 19,400 kilometers (about 12,120 miles) and White is safe and secure in my garage. I've taxed it for another year and it passed the MOT test so all ready to go for another year. I've booked to go to North Wales in June and should be out and about before then anyway.
|September 2010 I had my usual "pilgrimage"
for a week to North Wales to ride on and off road based at
my chums Kev and Sammys' place near Bala. The weather was
all over the place as usual but still got out and about.

I bought a used Oxford Maximiser (I already have an Oxford Optimiser) so I can now plug both my bikes into a trickle charger and the Maximiser can also do the cage.

Motorcycles late in the month.
In early August I had a ride around the green lanes near Poddington and finally found a lane I had tried to find for years that leads South from Santa Pod (see left) towards Sharnbrook that you can then use to make a loop with Yelnow Lane.

I had a nice ride out on the 9th and as it was a warm and sunny day I decided to venture a little further North again. I tried various mainly easy lanes near to Kettering that I had not been on for 10 years plus (maybe never?) On one trail I came across this sign. Didn't see any badgers (they are nocturnal) but the sett did look tidy so I think they were about. As usual in this area I had good views of red kites circling not far away in the thermals.
|June 2010 Replacement road tax disc has
arrived and in the middle of June I had a nice ride about
off road mainly on the Icknield Way (Roman Road) to East
of Ashwell and tried a trail off the Baldock to
Buntingford road somebody told me about years ago but
there was a locked gate and it looked unused so gave up on
that. I did try three short trails near Guilden Morden that I had not
been on for over 10 years (maybe never?), "Peacock Hill"
South of Ashwell, and a trail near Potton. On way back
near Everton I slowed for a muntjac deer to cross the road
in broad daylight. I didn't take any pictures but enjoyed
my day out.
May 2010 In late May I had a trail ride North of A14 in Northamptonshire and Cambridgeshire. I decided to ride a little further than usual and try out some trails I had not been on for over 10 years (maybe never?) as it was a sunny and warm day. I had a nice time on mainly very easy trails but when I got home noticed I had lost my road tax disc. I tried to apply for a duplicate online but you have to fill in a form and send it off with a fee and then I had to buy a new holder... Whilst out and about I had a very nice coffee and cake at Beans in Oundle.

Nooj from All Year Biker gets busy with the jet wash. Bike is as clean as it will ever be now and has been coated with ACF50 protection oil. I had this done at Motorcycle Republic and whilst there watched 2 red kites flying around only a couple of hundred yards away then a buzzard in a tree by the roadside on way back - good times.

|September 2009 I had an afternoon off
road on the 16th in North Wales which was good and two
afternoons in the sunshine on the North Bedfordshire lanes
before they closed for winter. Also checked out a couple
of lanes that I'm not sure I have ever been on before
(certainly not in the last 10 years anyway.) One was very
easy but enjoyable north of A14 near Spaldwick & the
other was blocked at one end but still had a go up &
back near Strixton. Did about 250k in a weekend although
much of this was on tarmac.
Still no mirror.

I went up to Wales for a day to ride over the Wayfarer.
Bit showery & I was rusty but enjoyable day.
June 2009 I had a week up in North Wales & went out for 3 days on Green Lanes including a ride near Cader Idris where this shot was taken.
I had taken the bike up in advance in a van then rode my Z750S up for the week so that I had both available.

I had a nice green lane session around Podington on White & Yelnow lanes plus a couple of others. Was all going well so decided to try 40 Foot lane. Big mistake as I got stuck for about an hour when a nice chap on a KTM took pity on me & helped pull us out.
